Inflation Spin From Both Sides

· Fact-checked before it aired. Unconfirmed claims from this segment are not shown.

The claim of “record high inflation” under Republicans is not supported by the data. U.S. annual CPI inflation hit 9.1% in June 2022 under President Biden, then moderated to below 3% in the six months before Trump returned to office. It was 3% for the 12 months ending January 2025 and 2.7% for the 12 months ending June 2025; core CPI was 2.9%. Prices overall have not fallen under Trump — CPI rose 0.8% from January to June 2025.

The big inflation spike was driven by pandemic supply-chain disruptions, stimulus spending and Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. More recent price moves have been tied to gas prices from Middle East conflict, shipping costs and the delayed effect of tariffs. Both parties cherry-pick start dates and items to assign blame.

Inflation is not at a record high. Annual CPI inflation was about 2.7% for the 12 months ending June 2025, down from the 9.1% peak in June 2022. This is an immigration/sovereignty rant without a specific, checkable factual claim. Same as above: no clear factual claim to verify.

Republicans trying to spin record high inflation as positive is genuinely hilarious. At least they stopped blaming President Biden. Rome wasn't built in a day messaging failed while controlling the White House, Senate, House of Congress & with a 6-3 conservative Supreme Court

What the hosts said

BRecord high inflation? No. Not even close.
BYou saw that post too.
BFly Sistah on X says Republicans are spinning record high inflation as positive.
BAnd that they've stopped blaming Biden because they now control everything.
BThe "record high" part is false... we have to say that up front.
BExactly. Annual inflation was 2.7 percent in June.
BJune 2022 under Biden it hit 9.1 percent. Those are different planets.
BBut the post is pointing at something real. Prices are still high.
BVoters don't feel the rate, they feel the level.
BHigh, yes. Record high, no.
BIf you say "record high" when it's a third of the peak, you lose the argument.
BHere's my push. The anger is not about the inflation rate.
BIt's about wages not catching up after four years of price hikes.
BThat's fair. But the post doesn't say "prices are still too high."
BIt says record high. That's a false claim, not a mood.
BOh, come on. You know exactly what she meant.
BRepublicans have all three branches, and people are still paying more for eggs.
BI know what she meant. I also know what the number is.
BFine. But let's apply the same standard to the other side.
BTrump says prices are down, everything is way down. CNN says that's false.
BHe's wrong too. I said this is about honesty, not just one party.
BSo both sides are lying about prices, and we're stuck in the middle.
BNot stuck. We can say the truth simply.
BInflation has cooled a lot, but prices are still rising slowly.
BThat's not a victory lap for anyone.
BIt isn't. And that's exactly the problem for the White House.
BOkay, but here's where I think you're too easy on the Democrats.
BEconomists point to pandemic supply chains, stimulus, and Ukraine as factors behind the 9.1 percent peak.
BYou can't hang all of that on Biden.
BI'm not saying all. But he was president when it peaked.
BPresidents own the economy on their watch, fairly or not.
BAnd Trump inherited an inflation rate that was already under three.
BIf prices are still a political wound, that's his now too.
BYes. That's the trap for the GOP.
BThey promised to bring prices down, not just slow the climb.
BThat's exactly my point! The post's "Rome wasn't built in a day" line cuts.
BYou can't run on "we'll fix it" and then blame the last guy forever.
BI don't disagree. But making up "record high" gives the other side an easy out.
BMaybe. But the fact-checkers are also hitting Trump and Democrats for cherry-picking.
BFactCheck says both sides are making misleading price claims.
BWhich means the listener gets spin from both directions.
BAnd nobody says the obvious thing: prices are still higher than people want.
BGas is going up again, in every state. Omair Sharif says it's not a blue state story.
BSo the next fight is about gas, not just eggs.
BI think the next fight is about who has a plan to actually lower prices.
BDo they? I haven't heard a plan that would do it fast.
BThey have plans. They're just not popular.
BTariffs, energy production, deregulation. Those have costs and benefits.
BAnd winners and losers. That's why both parties prefer a blame fight.
BListen, I'm not defending false numbers. I'm saying the post's underlying complaint is legitimate.
BI can accept that. But get the number right.
BFair. I'll hold the Democrats to the same standard.
BThen we'll both be busy until the next inflation report.
BCan't wait.
