Hyundai wants to sell humanoid robots at dealerships

· Fact-checked before it aired. Unconfirmed claims from this segment are not shown.

Boston Dynamics opened the Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia on Sept. 21, 2026, to train Atlas humanoid robots for manufacturing. In early October, it unveiled a new four-fingered hand with 13 degrees of freedom — nearly double the previous seven — enabling delicate tasks like using a power drill and tightening nuts. Hyundai Motor Group plans to deploy about 25,000 Atlas units across its global plants, starting with parts sequencing at HMGMA in 2028 and expanding to parts assembly by 2030. A new U.S. facility is planned to produce 30,000 robots annually.

Hyundai wants to integrate humanoid robots into auto manufacturing to handle repetitive, strenuous tasks and improve efficiency. The RMAC provides real-world training data to improve Atlas's AI through a “Data Flywheel,” where field data is fed back to retrain and revalidate the model.

Boston Dynamics did unveil a new four-fingered hand for Atlas in early October, and Hyundai Motor Group plans to deploy about 25,000 Atlas units across its global plants. The hand is not called “GR3” in official materials.

Hyundai CEO José Muñoz said the company could sell robots through its existing dealer partners, and Hyundai Capital is exploring whether it could finance robots.

Front USB ports often use lower-spec internal headers or longer cables, so high-speed devices may be limited compared with rear ports. The “every device” wording is an overstatement, but the general point is accurate.

🚨 NEW: Hyundai could sell Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robots through its existing dealership network. Imagine buying a humanoid robot through an automotive dealer. This could be a major step toward commercialising humanoid robotics at scale. https://t.co/DCmrrP0svt

What the hosts said

CHyundai just floated selling a humanoid robot the way you buy a Sonata. At a dealership. With financing.
MWould you like the extended warranty on your robot?
CHonestly, yes. CEO José Muñoz said dealers could sell Atlas, and The Executioners flagged it on X.
MLet's be precise. He said could. And Hyundai's finance arm is exploring robot financing. Exploring.
CSure. But a dealer already has a showroom, a service bay and a loan desk. That's the whole machine for selling something complicated.
MA humanoid in a factory isn't a family sedan. Who walks into a dealership for one?
CA machine shop with ten employees. They can't call Boston Dynamics and wait in a queue.
MMaybe. Now the part underneath it. Arboryx AI posted on X about Atlas getting a new hand.
CAnd the hand is the real story. Four fingers, thirteen degrees of freedom. Nearly double the old one.
MSmall correction. The post calls it GR3, but the official materials don't use that name.
CFair. Best detail, though: the engineers taped their pinky and ring fingers together for a day to see what they'd miss.
MSomebody in that meeting said, "Who's got tape?"
CAnd they didn't miss them! Simulations, 3D-printed mockups, and the little finger got cut. Now it can run a power drill and tighten nuts.
MA drill demo isn't a factory shift. Hyundai wants about twenty-five thousand Atlas units across its plants.
CAnd the first job comes in 2028, in Georgia. That's two years away.
MIt's parts sequencing. Putting parts in order. The easy job. Real assembly is 2030.
CRight, you start with the boring job. Every wave of automation did.
MWelding robots were bolted to the floor doing one motion. A humanoid has to handle chaos.
CThat's exactly why the training center matters! Real factory, real data, fed back into the model.
MThey call it a data flywheel. Every pitch deck has a flywheel.
COh, come on! This one has an actual plant attached! Most humanoid startups would trade a kidney for that.
MOkay. A parent company that already runs car factories is a real advantage.
CThank you.
MBut my worry isn't the hand, it's the promise. A new U.S. plant making thirty thousand robots a year. Planned.
CPlanned is how cars and rockets got built. I'd rather a company name a date and risk missing it.
MFine. At least the date is public, so we can hold them to it.
CDeal. We check back in 2028.
MI'll bring the tape.
