Illegal Population Down Two Point Three Million

· Fact-checked before it aired. Unconfirmed claims from this segment are not shown.

The White House published a release on October 20, 2026 claiming the illegal immigrant population has fallen by at least 2.3 million since President Trump took office, with more than 3 million migrants leaving, nearly 1.2 million deported or removed, and roughly 1.3 million arrests. It also claimed southern border crossings fell 95% from Biden-era levels in FY2026. An outside estimate from the Center for Immigration Studies supports a 2.3 million drop in the illegal population between January 2025 and July 2026, from about 15.8 million to 13.5 million. But NPR and the Migration Policy Institute report the government's “more than 3 million self-deported” figure is disputed, with independent estimates between 310,000 and 1.5 million.

The administration credits its policies—ending catch-and-release, expanding interior enforcement, and deterrence measures—for the drop. Independent analysts note illegal migration was already falling in 2024 after Biden-era asylum limits, and that factors like weather and home-country conditions also influence migration.

The White House did release these figures in October 2026. The illegal-population drop of about 2.3 million is supported by a Center for Immigration Studies estimate, but the “95%” border-crossing figure and “over 3 million migrants leaving” are administration claims that independent analysts say are overstated or hard to verify.

What the hosts said

BThe White House now claims the illegal immigrant population is down two point three million since Trump returned, and border crossings dropped ninety-five percent.
BOwen Gregorian posted that on X, linking to a Gateway Pundit write-up. I saw it everywhere.
BThe first number actually has outside support. The Center for Immigration Studies estimates the illegal population fell from almost sixteen million to thirteen and a half million.
BIf that holds, it is the first time net migration has been negative since the Great Depression.
BThat is historic. But the ninety-five percent figure? PBS has already called that misleading.
BSure, but crossings have collapsed. Nobody serious denies that.
BI am not denying it. But ninety-five percent depends on which months you compare.
BOh, come on. Deterrence is working. The direction is unmistakable.
BDirection, yes. The White House also claims more than three million migrants left. Independent estimates put self-deportations between three hundred ten thousand and one point five million.
BSo only hundreds of thousands to a million and a half self-deported. That is still enormous.
BBut it is not three million. When you write policy on a chalkboard, words matter.
BThis is exactly what drives me nuts. For years the left said the border was fine. Now the administration enforces the law, and we are nitpicking the exact count?
BNo. We can support enforcement and still demand honest numbers. Those are not opposites.
BFair. Honest numbers. The deportations are close to a million, and the population drop has outside estimates behind it.
BRight. That is the story worth leading with: a drop in the illegal population that outside estimates back up.
BAnd NPR reports enforcement went way beyond the border. Interior sweeps, expanded removals, ending catch-and-release.
BThat changed behavior. Migrants did not just stop crossing; many who were here left.
BBut here is where I push back on skeptics. They say Biden's 2024 asylum limits already started the decline.
BThat is true. The drop started before Trump returned.
BBut the scale changed. Two point three million is not a continuation, that is a break.
BI would say it is a continuation that got supercharged. Weather, home-country economies, and Trump's deterrence all played a role.
BNPR quotes Marc Rosenblum of the Migration Policy Institute saying close to a million people have been deported.
BAnd he says the government stopped publishing some granular statistics. That makes full verification harder.
BStill, Steve Camarota and Karen Ziegler of the Center for Immigration Studies used census data. They estimate a two point three million drop.
BIt is an estimate. A solid one, but still an estimate.
BAnd some online pushback is basically, accept migrants or pay fines. That is not a policy.
BIt is a talking point, not an argument.
BThe actual policy is more interior enforcement, no catch-and-release, and a clear message that illegal entry will not hold.
BThat message matters as much as the numbers.
BFor communities, schools and hospitals feel the change before Washington does.
BFor workers in construction and service jobs, it changes wage pressure.
BMy take: this is the biggest domestic policy win of this administration, bigger than any tax cut.
BI would put it up there, but I am not ready to say bigger than the economy.
BReally? The economy turns on rates and global demand. This is a structural change to who is in the country.
BYou are sounding like a White House press release.
BGuilty. But the Center for Immigration Studies has been around for decades, and its methods are public.
BTrue, but it does favor restriction. Still, the population fell sharply.
BThe friction now is whether three million really left or not. We should say claimed, not fact.
BExactly. The administration claimed it; independent analysts say between three hundred ten thousand and one point five million.
BSo even the low end would be a major outflow, if those estimates hold.
BThat is the fair way to put it.
BAnd every Republican running for office will run on it.
BEvery Democrat will point out the decline started before Trump. Both have a piece of the truth.
BThen let's hope the campaigns use the honest numbers.
BIf they do, that will be the real surprise.
