MTonight on Tech Tonight: Apple's first foldable is here and it's already a mess.
CA glorious mess. The iPhone Duo went on sale today, starting at two thousand dollars.
MAnd by "on sale," we mean preorders already sold out, and walk-in stock is basically a rumor.
CDelivery estimates have already slipped to late January. So Apple's newest phone is also a long wait.
MAnd here's my question: is this real demand, or is it the same manufactured scarcity Apple does every single time?
CCome on, a foldable iPhone has been the rumor for eight years. Of course people want it.
MPeople want to SEE it. Wanting to buy it at two grand is a different thing.
CWe've got early notes from a reviewer on X who actually has one. The Freeknd posted four quick takeaways.
MFirst one hits hard: you will miss Face ID.
CYeah, the phone dropped it for a side button fingerprint reader. It's a trade-off for the hinge.
MAnd their second note: don't take selfies with the inside front camera. It's strictly for FaceTime.
CTranslation: the inside camera is terrible and they're being nice about it.
MThat's exactly the translation. But their third note says app compatibility won't be an issue in a few weeks.
CI think that's optimistic. Foldable screens mean developers have to redesign for two aspect ratios.
MReviewers noted third-party apps still need work for the new display. So it's not imaginary.
CBut their last note is the one that matters: "This thing is hella fun to use."
MFun is not the same as good. Fun is what you say about a toy.
CAnd a two-thousand-dollar toy is exactly what a foldable iPhone should be. Come on, you know you want to flip it open in a meeting.
MI want to flip it open and see if the crease shows in sunlight. That's the real test.
CSpeaking of the price, there's already a giveaway account on X promising iPhone Duo units, PlayStation 5s and something called AirPods 5.
MThat has every red flag. Nobody has confirmed any "AirPods 5" exists, and a bitcoin rewards app is doing the promotion.
CFolding phones are hot enough to scam with already. That's a sign, honestly.
MGood reason not to click the link. Meanwhile, the actual foldable market just got a lot more interesting for one more reason.
CMiles Roderick posted that Apple has shown demand for a two-thousand-dollar phone and now needs to meet it. Which is the least controversial take ever.
MThe controversial part is whether Apple can. History says they'll ship late, and everyone will still buy it.
CBecause when Apple finally does a thing, people show up. Even at two grand, even with a crease.
MWe'll see. The iPhone Duo is on sale now, if you can find one. Good luck, and maybe don't trust that giveaway.
