Rivian R2 Takes On Model Y

· Fact-checked before it aired. Unconfirmed claims from this segment are not shown.

Rivian's own SEC filings describe its "AI-centric end-to-end approach" and the "Rivian Autonomy Platform," and it says it leverages data from its vehicles to "continuously improve the system," confirming it is developing in-vehicle AI/autonomy capabilities.

Rivian says the R2, its upcoming midsize SUV, will start under $50,000 (around $45,000) and is expected to begin customer deliveries in Q2 2026, positioning it against Tesla's Model Y and other mid-price EVs. The Rivian R2, starting under $50k, is entering the electric vehicle arena. This positions Rivian directly against the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6, and Ford Mustang Mach-E, marking a significant move in the EV market. #Rivian #EV https://t.co/OVWCxVMo5F

What the hosts said

MRivian says the R2 is finally landing under fifty grand—and now we know when.
CQ2 2026. I've been waiting on this one. A Rivian I might actually be able to buy.
MTest Miles on X pulled the details from the SEC filing. Around forty-five thousand to start.
CThat puts it dead center against the Model Y, the Ioniq 5, the EV6, the Mach-E. It's the fight everyone predicted three years ago.
MThe question is whether Rivian survives the fight. They just did layoffs, and their cash burn is still ugly.
CSure, but look at what they've actually built. The R1S is the best large EV on the road, and they've got the Amazon van business propping up volume.
MThe Amazon van business that Amazon keeps renegotiating every time Rivian loses money.
CEvery automaker loses money on electric right now, Matilda. Ford lost four billion on EVs last year.
MFord has F-150s to pay for that. Rivian has... a really nice truck and a dream.
CAnd a factory in Normal, Illinois that's actually producing. The R2 is built for volume. That's the whole bet.
MHere's my real worry. They're promising under fifty grand, but the R1T launched at sixty-seven and is now north of eighty for anything decent.
CThat was a premium flagship truck. The R2 is designed to be cheaper to make. Smaller battery, simpler interior.
MAnd by the time it ships in Q2 2026, Tesla's refreshed Model Y will have been out for a year. Hyundai's Ioniq 5 is already cheaper.
CBut nobody else has the brand. Rivian owners are a cult. They'll trade down from their R1S for the R2 and tell their friends.
MA cult with a limited congregation. They need people who've never driven a Rivian to buy the R2, not just existing fans.
CFine, but the product is there. The price is there. This is the first real moment where Rivian has a shot at mass market.
MI'll believe it when they actually ship at forty-five and hold the line on options. Until then, it's a promise.
CYou never believe any car company's promise.
MBecause they break them, Chris! Every single launch.
CAlright, that's enough on Rivian for this segment. We'll leave the cars there.
