Downside protection built in. You get Bitcoin exposure, but if it crashes, some of the blow is supposedly cushioned."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That's a fascinating product. And also, one quick correction before we move on."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Here we go."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That post says BlackRock has already filed for SEC approval. I can't find that in any major outlet or filing. It's a rumor from a crypto follower account, not confirmed."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Fair enough. But the idea is real enough—buffer funds have been a thing in regular equities for years."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Absolutely. You cap your upside, you cushion your downside. The question with Bitcoin is: why bother?"},{"host":"Bill","text":"Because there's a whole class of investor who's terrified of the volatility but doesn't want to miss the run. This is for them."},{"host":"Adam","text":"But if you're that scared of Bitcoin, isn't the real buffer just owning less of it?"},{"host":"Bill","text":"Don't bring logic into a product launch."},{"host":"Adam","text":"The irony is, buffered ETFs have their own risks. If the buffer only protects against the first, say, ten percent drop—"},{"host":"Bill","text":"And Bitcoin can drop forty percent in a bad month."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Right. So you're giving up a chunk of the upside for protection that might vaporize in a real crash."},{"host":"Bill","text":"I still think it'll sell. Wall Street loves a product that sounds safer."},{"host":"Adam","text":"It'll absolutely sell. I just wouldn't call it safer. I'd call it Bitcoin with extra fees."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Speaking of things that sound better than they are—I saw a Bitcoin post this week that couldn't even agree with itself."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Oh, the one with the headline and the number?"},{"host":"Bill","text":"Analytics Insight wrote a headline saying Bitcoin is NEAR eighty-four thousand, then in the same post says it's above eighty-three."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That's not near. That's a thousand dollars apart. In Bitcoin terms that's a rounding error, I suppose, but still."},{"host":"Bill","text":"And then it quotes ETF inflows of twenty-three point two million for Bitcoin and over a billion for Ether in October. Those numbers don't track with any major outlet."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That outlet's own disclaimer says the figures may be outdated and it's not a reliable price source. So it's a post about a price that's wrong, using flows that can't be confirmed."},{"host":"Bill","text":"But it has a nice headline."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That's the whole business model. Write 'Bitcoin nears eighty-four K', get the clicks, nobody reads the disclaimer."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Meanwhile, an exchange-promo account was saying U.S. Bitcoin ETFs saw six hundred thirty-six million in outflows on October twenty-second."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Which is also not confirmed anywhere I can find."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Right. So on the same day, depending on who you read, Bitcoin ETF flows were either fine, terrible, or a billion dollars into Ether."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Very useful for investors."},{"host":"Bill","text":"It's the crypto information environment in one day. Nobody can agree on what's happening, and everyone posts a number with total confidence."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And here's the thing—if you're making decisions based on those posts, you're not investing. You're gambling on someone else's sloppy typo."},{"host":"Bill","text":"My rule remains: if the number doesn't come from a real newsroom or a filing, it's a rumor. Fine for entertainment."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Not so fine for your savings."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Different corner of the internet entirely. A lawyer on Bluesky, Raffi Melkonian, posted something that stuck with me."},{"host":"Adam","text":"What did he say?"},{"host":"Bill","text":"He thinks about the catastrophes Trump has baked into the global economy that haven't happened yet, shrugs, and pours more coffee because there's nothing he can do about it."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That's a mood, not an argument. It assumes the catastrophes are already baked in, which is the whole thing people disagree on."},{"host":"Bill","text":"I think what he's really saying is: some people are exhausted. They're not cashing out of the market, they're just... bracing."},{"host":"Adam","text":"I get the shrug. But 'catastrophe hasn't eventuated yet' is an unfalsifiable position. It could never eventuate and he'd say, 'It's still coming.'"},{"host":"Bill","text":"Or it could eventuate and he'd say 'I told you so.'"},{"host":"Adam","text":"Exactly. But here's what's true: the market doesn't care about vibes. It prices what it can see. And right now it's not pricing catastrophe."},{"host":"Bill","text":"No, it's pricing a Bitcoin buffered ETF."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That's the thing. Wall Street's launching products, China just posted strong GDP, and this guy's pouring coffee waiting for the sky."},{"host":"Bill","text":"And someone on Bluesky replied to that mood with a simpler take: 'Destroy the myth that Republicans are better for the economy.'"},{"host":"Adam","text":"That's a slogan, not a position. Which Republicans? Which economy? You can't just wave a hand at forty years of data."},{"host":"Bill","text":"I'll say this—markets have done fine under both parties. The Trump years before COVID were solid. So were parts of the Obama years. It's never as clean as either party wants."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And whoever happens to be president gets blamed or credited for the Fed's decisions, which is its own kind of nonsense."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Right. I'm not endorsing anyone. I'm saying the 'myth' framing is lazy. It's a way to feel righteous without doing the work."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And it doesn't tell you what to do with your money. Which, for a money show, is kind of the point."},{"host":"Bill","text":"To absolutely nobody's surprise, the best economic commentary on the internet this weekend was a Tottenham joke."},{"host":"Adam","text":"What was it?"},{"host":"Bill","text":"Somebody on Bluesky wrote: 'A Tottenham winning streak? In this economy?!'"},{"host":"Adam","text":"I love that. It's the 'in this economy' meme, and the joke is that Tottenham winning is such a black swan event it's now an economic indicator."},{"host":"Bill","text":"And someone else piled on: 'Nooks AND crannies? In this economy?'"},{"host":"Adam","text":"That's just a man being asked to consider both nooks and crannies and deciding the budget only covers one."},{"host":"Bill","text":"It's a wonderful little reminder that even in a world of ETF flows and Bitcoin rumors, the economy is really just whether you can afford both nooks and crannies."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And whether Tottenham can hold a lead."}]}
