The plan will take the company private, with affiliates of the Getty family and Koch Equity Development owning 100% after restructuring. Getty has about $2.1 billion in total debt; the investors committed up to $533 million in new equity, and Koch provided up to $143 million in debtor-in-possession financing. The company's planned merger with Shutterstock collapsed in July 2026 after the board declined to proceed with a UK Competition and Markets Authority process. Getty shares had lost about 99% of their value since 2022 and were delisted from NYSE, now trading OTC as GETY.\n\nThe bankruptcy follows the failed Shutterstock merger, heavy debt, and growing competition from AI-generated imagery that has squeezed Getty's licensing model. Liquidity weakened materially: net cash used in operating activities was $108.7 million and free cash flow was negative $122.6 million in the first half of 2026, with only $81.6 million in total available liquidity at June 30, 2026.\n\nGetty Images filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 21, 2026, to implement a prepackaged plan taking the company private; its planned merger with Shutterstock collapsed in July 2026 amid roughly $2.1 billion in debt and competition from AI-generated imagery.\n\nGetty Images filed Chapter 11 on Oct. 21, 2026, as part of a prepackaged restructuring to go private after its Shutterstock merger failed; the company has about $2.1 billion in debt and faces AI competition.\n\nGetty Images filed Chapter 11 on Oct. 21, 2026, to go private after the Shutterstock merger collapsed, citing heavy debt and AI-generated imagery pressure.\n\nGetty Images formalized its restructuring and filed Chapter 11 on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, to go private after the Shutterstock merger collapsed.","publishedAt":"2026-10-23T13:30:08.901Z","channel":{"id":"money","name":"Oncast Money","language":"en"},"show":"Market Open","verification":{"status":"verified","leadVerdict":"TRUE","notes":"TRUE: Getty Images filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 21, 2026, to implement a prepackaged plan taking the company private; its planned merger with Shutterstock collapsed in July 2026 amid roughly $2.1 billion in debt and competition from AI-generated imagery.\nSource: [cnbc.com](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/21/getty-images-files-for-bankruptcy-advances-restructuring-plan.html), [money.usnews.com](https://money.usnews.com/inve (https://x.com/MashableIndia/status/2113533209690734943)\n\nTRUE: Getty Images filed Chapter 11 on Oct. 21, 2026, as part of a prepackaged restructuring to go private after its Shutterstock merger failed; the company has about $2.1 billion in debt and faces AI competition.\nSource: [cnbc.com](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/21/getty-images-files-for-bankruptcy-advances-restructuring-plan.html) NAMES: Shutterstock = Getty's stock-photo/video r (https://x.com/starbizmy/status/2112863318813614288)\n\nTRUE: Getty Images filed Chapter 11 on Oct. 21, 2026, to go private after the Shutterstock merger collapsed, citing heavy debt and AI-generated imagery pressure.\nSource: [cnbc.com](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/21/getty-images-files-for-bankruptcy-advances-restructuring-plan.html) (https://x.com/NewsOrbitUS/status/2112960981080965561)\n\nTRUE: Getty Images formalized its restructuring and filed Chapter 11 on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, to go private after the Shutterstock merger collapsed.\nSource: [cnbc.com](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/21/getty-images-files-for-bankruptcy-advances-restructuring-plan.html) (https://x.com/BlueCrewViking/status/2112870915075719246)","claims":[{"verdict":"TRUE","summary":"Getty Images filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 21, 2026, to implement a prepackaged plan taking the company private; its planned merger with Shutterstock collapsed in July 2026 amid roughly $2.1 billion in debt and competition from AI-generated imagery.","sourceName":"[cnbc.com](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/21/getty-images-files-for-bankruptcy-advances-restructuring-plan.html), [money.usnews.com](https://money.usnews.com/inve","sourceUrl":"https://x.com/MashableIndia/status/2113533209690734943","claim":"Getty Images heads to Chapter 11 as AI image generators squeeze its licensing model. It's a rhetorical question, but it's the right question this week."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Liquidity is always the answer when everything sells off at once. When the AI trade unwinds, people sell what they can, not what they want. That's liquidity."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And it's not just stocks. The selling is spreading across the market."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Which tells you this isn't just a tech story. It's a risk appetite story. When the hottest trade in the market breaks, everything feels it."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Different corner of the same story: Steve Rattner posted on Bluesky that 2025's jobs reports initially added up to one point two million new jobs, and after revisions, just one hundred sixteen thousand. A ninety percent cut."},{"host":"Bill","text":"I saw that number and I don't trust it. BLS revisions are complicated, and that specific figure needs verification. But if it's even close, it changes the whole labor market narrative."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Right, we can't confirm that exact revision. But the direction is worth noting. Initial jobs numbers have been revised down repeatedly, and that matters for how people feel about the economy."},{"host":"Bill","text":"And there's a Bluesky post from Forrest that says people don't think the economy is bad so much as evil. That's a feeling, not a statistic, but it captures something real."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Tressie McMillan Cottom went further, saying the scam economy is consuming the political will to fight authoritarianism. That's a heavy claim, but it's an opinion, not a fact."},{"host":"Bill","text":"It's an opinion a lot of people clearly share. The replies and reposts on that one tell you it's resonating."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And then there's the Harvard Youth Poll post from Kyle Griffin. Nearly two in three young voters motivated to oppose Trump, seventy-seven percent disapprove of his handling of the economy. Those numbers are unverified, but if they hold, that's a political earthquake."},{"host":"Bill","text":"The economy is the issue. Always has been. If young voters think the economy is broken, they vote accordingly. That's not partisan, that's just how it works."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And it ties back to what we were just saying. When people see a business that was worth billions crater, they don't think 'creative destruction.' They think something is broken."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Or they think the game is rigged. That's the 'evil' part. The rules changed, the winners changed, and a lot of people feel left behind."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Which is exactly why the jobs revision matters. If the labor market was never as strong as the headlines said, then the whole 'everything is fine' story falls apart."},{"host":"Bill","text":"And the market is telling you the same thing. When the AI trade breaks and bonds rally, that's not confidence. That's fear looking for a hiding place."},{"host":"Bill","text":"And that's the argument for the next few weeks. Is this a shakeout or a regime change? I think the AI infrastructure credit stress we talked about earlier says it's more than a shakeout."},{"host":"Adam","text":"I'm not ready to go that far. The economy is still growing, earnings are still coming in, and the bond market is giving you a safety valve. This could be a healthy correction."},{"host":"Bill","text":"A healthy correction doesn't take a business that was worth billions down that far. A healthy correction doesn't make young voters think the economy is evil. Something deeper is going on."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Or maybe one company just got disrupted, and the rest is noise. Not every collapse is a sign of the apocalypse."},{"host":"Bill","text":"No, but when the disruptor is AI and the disrupted is a licensing business, that's a signal. The old rules don't apply anymore."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And that's exactly what the market is trying to price. New rules, new winners, new losers. The volatility is the market arguing with itself."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Which is why I'm watching liquidity, not just prices. When the selling stops, we'll know if this was a panic or a paradigm shift."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And we'll be here either way, reading the posts and arguing about it. That's the show."}]}
