I thought they were merging with Shutterstock."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That deal collapsed. CNBC reports Getty filed Wednesday in Delaware."},{"host":"Bill","text":"The world's biggest photo library couldn't pay its bills."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Chapter 11 is restructuring, not shutting down. They lined up 143 million dollars in financing."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Sure, but the reason matters. AI-generated images are eating their licensing business alive."},{"host":"Adam","text":"That's the simple story. Getty also had heavy debt and a failed merger."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Oh, come on! When anyone can type a prompt and get a photo, who needs a stock library?"},{"host":"Adam","text":"Plenty of buyers: newsrooms, ad agencies, legal teams. They need images they can actually license and defend."},{"host":"Bill","text":"But the revenue says they weren't buying enough. Getty didn't file bankruptcy because business was great."},{"host":"Adam","text":"I'm not saying AI didn't hurt. I'm saying it wasn't the only thing that broke them."},{"host":"Bill","text":"No, it was probably also the debt pile and the merger that went nowhere."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Exactly. A Chapter 11 filing often means the balance sheet failed, not the product."},{"host":"Bill","text":"But the product is under attack! Every design tool now has AI image generation built in."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And half those images are unusable for commercial work because you can't prove the license!"},{"host":"Bill","text":"They're getting better, and Getty knows it. The competitive threat is real."},{"host":"Adam","text":"I'll give you that. AI is a real threat. But let's not pretend Getty was thriving before AI."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Fine, it wasn't thriving. But the filing still says AI and the failed merger did it."},{"host":"Adam","text":"You can't blame the merger twice."},{"host":"Bill","text":"I can if it collapsed at the worst time."},{"host":"Adam","text":"One thing that's true: their archive is still enormously valuable."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Yeah, the historical archive isn't going to be recreated by an AI prompt."},{"host":"Adam","text":"So Chapter 11 gives them a chance to restructure around that."},{"host":"Bill","text":"A chance, not a guarantee."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Speaking of who's winning, J.C. Rodriguez posted a sharp piece on bank earnings."},{"host":"Bill","text":"He says JPMorgan, Goldman, Citi and Wells Fargo all had a huge quarter."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And the fastest-growing piece, he claims, was lending to hedge funds to bet bigger."},{"host":"Bill","text":"He calls it 'the house always wins.' Banks earn fees whether the market goes up or down."},{"host":"Adam","text":"But lending to hedge funds isn't free money. If a fund blows up, the bank eats losses."},{"host":"Bill","text":"That's what margin and collateral are for. They manage that risk every day."},{"host":"Adam","text":"They also managed risk in 2008. Earnings are backwards-looking."},{"host":"Bill","text":"Come on, this is not 2008. Prime brokerage is a fee business now, more disciplined."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Until it isn't. Just today, a bank can report a great quarter while sitting on hidden leverage."},{"host":"Bill","text":"So you'd rather banks not lend to hedge funds? That would dry up liquidity."},{"host":"Adam","text":"I'd rather we not call it 'the house always wins.' It's a business with risk, not a casino."},{"host":"Bill","text":"You say casino like it's an insult. They're literally market makers."},{"host":"Adam","text":"And market makers can lose a fortune when volatility spikes the wrong way."},{"host":"Bill","text":"That's exactly my point! They get paid for that risk, and this quarter they got paid a lot."},{"host":"Adam","text":"Fine. Strong quarter, yes. Guaranteed future? No."},{"host":"Bill","text":"So we agree: the house usually wins, except when it doesn't."}]}
