The reporting led to Theranos voiding two years of test results, losing its Walgreens partnership, federal sanctions banning Holmes from the blood-testing business for at least two years, and criminal charges. Holmes was sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison and began serving her sentence on May 30, 2023.\n\nThe WSJ reporting exposed that Theranos's marketing and valuation ($9 billion at peak) far outpaced its actual technology. Ex-employees told Carreyrou they questioned the accuracy of the Edison machine, and that Theranos was diluting small blood samples to run them on commercial analyzers—creating accuracy problems that posed public health risks.\n\nThe Wall Street Journal's reporting by John Carreyrou beginning in October 2015 exposed serious flaws in Theranos's blood-testing technology, triggering the company's collapse and Elizabeth Holmes's eventual conviction and prison sentence.\n\nEurope has experienced severe wildfire seasons, with deadly blazes burning hundreds of thousands of hectares; rural depopulation and land abandonment are contributing factors to wildfire risk.
