UNHCR says more than 250,000 people have been internally displaced since fighting reignited, and OCHA later put the displacement figure near 260,000, with nearly half seeking refuge in Taiz. The Houthis have encircled Taiz, and a ballistic missile strike on a Shabwa training camp killed at least 58 people.\n\nFighting escalated sharply after the Houthis announced a blockade of Saudi ports in July and then seized strategic Red Sea coastal territory, prompting a Saudi-backed counteroffensive, Operation Dawn of Yemen. Taiz is central to the displacement crisis because of its encirclement and intensified shelling.\n\nThe WHO says 8,513 casualties have been recorded in Yemen since the escalation began in August, including 1,574 killed and 6,939 injured as of October 19.
